anybody out there

geeeez its been almost 3 days since the last post.. i was starting to worry.

i have a question... i went to visit F today ( i will be writing about that in my blog when I'm finished here) he is in jail for anyone who missed that. a bunch of us were talking b4 we went in and this girl was saying how she believes people are born addicts.. not nec. to drugs or alcohol but they are born i guess with the "gene" or w/e that makes their body...brain become addicted more easily i guess than others w/o it. im not sure if i completly agree with that i mean yea if ur mother gave birth to you while using or maybe if she was addicted or your father... but what if you are the only one... i dont know...

what are your thoughts on this topic.......

First off I hope your visit went well.
Now as far as people born addicts, yea I think its something that your born with. I know that not am I only an addict but I have an addictive personality. Most of the addicts I see and know are the same way.

I believe that this is a fairly heavely debated subject with the population leaning towards certain people being born with a gene that makes them prone to addictions. Either way, it is a disease. Doesn't make it right, doesn't make it wrong, and it doesn't make it go away.

It scares me either way. I do believe that some people will become what ever they want to. I do believe that some people are predisposed to being an addict, like it only took once. I am not. I have drank, I don't like it. I have smoked weed(once) I hated it. But look at an American Indian. They are so ravaged by alcoholism. It has to be some of how someone is wired. I have addicts in my family but neither direct parent is one.

It scares the shit out of me.

Can I be added to post here too? E?

There are a couple of school of thought on addiction. The two biggest are the disease concept and the chemical health concept.
Disease=genetic; you are born with it and once you pick up a drink or drug, it's all downhill from there unless you abstain totally.
Chemical Health=it's an environmental thing; a learned behavior. You can "unlearn" it and return to moderate social use by changing the way you think about alcohol. They do not claim it to work with drugs, and also say if you have developed a "true" dependency, then your chances of moderating at anything are next to none, although not entirely impossible for some.

I used to teach chemical health concept and also counseled clients in that manner. But, I believe I was wrong for the most part and schooled in an area that has some major problems with its philosophy.
I know believe its genetic; its a disease; and I fucking have it -- damnit.

Peace,
Scout

I am probably the only one on here posting that does not think it is a disease! I still love the rest of you though :). No, I am not 100% sold on the idea. But I do not think it is a disease.

It took me years to beleive it. Once you do (and really mean it) it makes it so much easier to recover. It took me getting to my "rock bottom" though.
